He earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Maastricht University, where he developed a strong interest in cognitive neuroscience. He subsequently completed a Master of Science in Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience at Maastricht University, and next went on to specialize in neuroimaging research and Alzheimer’s disease at Massachusetts General Hospital. His previous research focused on the role of the noradrenergic brainstem system in resilience to Alzheimer’s disease.
In his free time, he enjoys rock climbing, captaining a billiards team, and organizing electronic music events.

Michiel van Elk,
Principal Investigator
Michiel van Elk is Associate Professor at Leiden University. Their research focuses on the neural and psychological mechanisms underlying psychedelic-induced altered states. Within INTEGRATE, they contribute expertise in advancing the methodological rigor of psychedelic science. Their work aims to address the validity threats that currently limit insight in the working mechanisms, efficacy and safety of psychedelic therapy. Regarding psychedelic research, they adopt an approach that emphasizes controlled clinical trials with state-of-the-art cognitive neuroscience methods and seek to elucidate how psychedelics affect our brain, body and mind.
